Few people have impacted the world as much as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. And with someone that is so much larger than life, it is fascinating and rewarding to discover the man behind the legend.
Firebrand lawyer, political lightning rod, spiritual ascetic, pop icon, smiling face on currency notes. Will the real Gandhi please stand up?
The Gandhi StoryTrek will take you through the life and work of Gandhi in India and throw light on how a simple man wearing a loincloth became a political, spiritual and philosophical icon for the world.
Born on 2 October 1869 in the town of Porbandar, Gujarat, Mohandas Gandhi left at age 19 to study law in London. Unable to build a successful practice after his return to India, he took up a job in South Africa and experienced discrimination first hand when he got thrown out of a first-class train compartment for not giving up his seat to a white traveller.
Gandhi had found his calling. He channelled his outrage into the concept of satyagraha, or passive resistance, which he took from South Africa to India, where he led a campaign of civil disobedience against the British Raj. The nonviolent resistance snowballed into a nationwide independence movement with the Mahatma as its most inspirational leader. He turned the movement into a powerful organisation, leading a boycott of British goods to encourage ‘’swadeshi” (made in India) goods and nationwide civil disobedience movement.
But he was also reviled by many who held him responsible for India’s partition. Not long after independence, on 30th January 1948, Gandhi was shot dead by Hindu nationalist Nathuram Godse.
The Mahatma inspired millions because he didn’t just lead. He led by example. He spun his own cloth. He willingly went to jail. He performed hunger strikes. He embraced the untouchables and dressed the wounds of lepers.
Featuring meetings with academics, historians, curators and even the Mahatma’s family members, The Gandhi StoryTrek is designed to help you know and understand a giant who’s greatness lies beyond simplistic descriptions.
